A recent study looked at how media and personal feelings affect negative views about democracy in the US. Researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and other universities surveyed 2,000 people in 2022.
The study categorized media into regular news, conservative media, and social media like Facebook and Twitter. It found that watching regular news can help, but conservative media can make negative views worse. Facebook and similar sites often make negative feelings stronger, but Twitter doesn't have as much impact.
The study also found that feeling undervalued in society ('Feelings of Being Devalued') is a big factor. It predicts negative beliefs about democracy more than being conservative or feeling dominant.
Understanding these influences can help researchers and policymakers improve how people see democracy.
